This has worked for me, HP portable.
for the first time the proposed solutions did not come back with file
not found etc:
It seems to be a clean installation.
If any one needs more details contact me but tell me how to pass the
information.

This seems to fix it (at least for one version upgrade) for many
people
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331
after that...
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331-uvm
(some users may be on the versions of these packages suffixed with
-updates )
