Actually I mislooked according to the release notes of gutenprint, the Canon PIXMA iP4850 has (EXPERIMENTAL) support since version 5.2.10
Please try if the newer gutenprint 5.2.10 included in Ubuntu 15.04 (or 14.10) solves your problem.
You can test without installing by using an ubuntu-desktop live-cd.

Title:
  first print wrong others fine

Status in gutenprint package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Using a Canon ip4850, since few months problems with printing.

  Usually text is printed multiple times, different colours, styles and
  sizes on same paper.

  After following the instructions "USB printer does not print or prints
  garbage" most prints are fine, but still the first print is still
  rubbish.

  A temporally work around found, which works as follow:

  -- First print empty page in for example Writer

  -- Al other prints afterwards are fine

  Any suggestions to solve the last hurdle?
