I first described this bug in comment to duplicate

didn't distinguish them.

  uninstalling nvidia-331-updates requires manually killing nvidia-

Bug description:
  After I manually changed repositories from utopic to vivid, I couldn't
  install nvidia-346-updates (nvidia-340-updates similarly):

  1 nie w pełni zainstalowanych lub usuniętych.
  Konieczne pobranie 0 B/35,8 MB archiwów.
  Po tej operacji zostanie dodatkowo użyte 25,3 MB miejsca na dysku.

  This is probably the problem: userdel: user nvidia-persistenced is currently used by process 1814
  I killed this process (1814 ? 00:00:00 nvidia-persiste)
  and I installed nvidia-346-updates.
  After restart the system seems to work correctly.

  Uninstalling nvidia-331-updates seemed to require manually killing
  nvidia-persiste[nced?] on both computers on which I have Nvidia
  drivers installed.
