battery indicator missing on login

Bug description:
There is a long delay after entering my password at the login screen
before my desktop appears. Once it does appear the battery/power
indicator is missing.
The following is in /var/log/syslog
Aug 16 12:48:29 poplar gnome-session[1558]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-settings-daemon.desktop' failed to register before timeout
Aug 16 12:48:29 poplar gnome-session[1558]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry....
