multimedia volume control won't work "can't hear"

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-media

I don't get an error message I just can't hear anything in my
multimedia page. The volume controls are all slided to the furthest
position and the mute box is not checked either. It was working fine
yesterday up until I updated my Ubuntu.
