[Bug 1457592] Re: Fonts not displaying in Calc, Firefox, or FontMatrix, suddenly
In trying to fix the problem below, I installed font manager. This broke my desktop and I had no launcher or panel. I finally found the fix and have been trying to post it because all the other fixes did not work. AskUbuntu will not allow me to log in--screeenshot attached, no place to enter the password, and clicking on Login yields "Canceled." The thread for no launcher or panel is closed, yet I have a solution that isn't listed. Forums does not allow me to post anything because I don't have authority yet. I'm not a geek, I just have a different solution that should be posted somewhere. I want to suggest:
1) When a font is not found, Libre Calc should automatically substitute a font the way Libre Writer does. Two screenshots below showed what happened when my fonts were missing--the Calc cells were simply blank. (This is why I originally thought the problem was with Calc.)
2) There is a problem with font manager. After installing it, I opened it, couldn't figure out how to get it to find my fonts, and then discovered I had moved my Font folder from where it was (I moved instead of copied) so Fontmatrix couldn't find my fonts. So realized the problem, copied my Font folder back, closed font manager, restarted, and had no panel or launcher. After trying all the solutions posted for that problem, I finally did the following and wrote this up to post it to help others:
None of the above solutions worked for me. Here is what fixed my problem.
If you can log in to ubuntu as Guest and the panel and launcher work normally, but when you log in as your username the panel and launcher do not show up, it means there is a problem in your Home directory. There is a hidden file called .local in the Home directory. Something inside this file got corrupted.
To fix this,
(1) From the blank desktop, Control-Alt-F1 to get a terminal window.
Log in with your username and password as prompted.
(2) Rename the directory called .local
(Optional: ls -al This will show all the directories in your Home folder.)
mv .local .local-OLD
(3) Restart. If Control-Alt-Delete doesn't work, then
sudo shutdown -r now or sudo init 6
After restarting you should see a panel and launcher without any of your settings. Your Evolution mail might be missing, fonts, and many other settings.
To recover your settings:
(4) Open .local and .local-OLD in two windows.
In both, open the share folder.
(5) One by one, copy the folders from .local-OLD to .local, and restart each time. (Many of them are empty and you don't need them anyway.) If restart happens normally, then the folder/file you just replaced was not the problem. Some of the folders will have been re-created in the new .local folder.
If you remember what you were doing before the problem happened, you may be able to guess which folder caused the problem, and don't copy that folder over. In my case it was font-manager.

Title:
Fonts not displaying in Calc, Firefox, or FontMatrix, suddenly
Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Upon opening ods files with formulas on 20 May, Calc does not display
most of the cell contents.
In some cells the value is simply a text string, which appears in the
formula box but does not appear in the cell.
In one cell I enter the time, and what I entered shows up in the
formula box but does not show up in the cell. This time is used in a
formula for another cell.
In another cell I enter the date, and Calc correctly formats the date
and displays it in the cell. This date is used in a formula for
another cell.
The formula is not shown in the formula box. If I click on a cell, the RESULT of the formula shows in the formula box, but not in the cell.
In one case, the formula box does display the formula (=C3+B3). This occurs in a template ods file with no values (in C3 or B3).
Some of the lines on the spreadsheet are suddenly in red, and it takes several tries to get them to disappear.
The formats (colors of cells) are all displayed correctly. The font of each cell is still displayed in the font box, but most of the cell contents are not displaying at all.
Calc still works normally on other spreadsheets with no formulas. Calc was working normally on 6 May 2014.
Using Ubuntu 14.04. libreoffice-calc 1:4.2.8-0ubuntu2
I don't think I have any extensions installed. I use the normal ubuntu update process.
I ran the sudo apt-get -y intall libreoffice and the result is the same.
