[Bug 1462147] Re: Random text characters partially or completely missing
My system does not seem to like the nvidia driver (I went with
nvidia-340). The display looked like crap, even after working with
nvidia-settings. This has happened before; I think 173 may have been the
last driver that worked well for me. I back to nouveau and the older
versions of xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common. There's something
about my onboard video/monitor combination that often seems to exhibit
problems, even with the nouveau driver (although nouveau seems to be
working properly for me now). FWIW, Fedora Rawhide displays properly for
me with xorg-x11-server-common-1.17.1-14.fc23.x86_64, xorg-x11-server-
Xorg-1.17.1-14.fc23.x86_64, and xorg-x11-drv-
nouveau-1.0.11-3.fc23.x86_64

Title:
Random text characters partially or completely missing
Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Problem began upon upgrading of
xserver-xorg-core_1.17.1-0ubuntu3_amd64 and
xserver-xorg-common_1.17.1-0ubuntu3_amd64xorg
to
xserver-xorg-core_1.17.1-0ubuntu4_amd64 and
xserver-xorg-common_1.17.1-0ubuntu4_amd64xorg
and was resolved by reverting to the pre-upgrade packages. Apparently random text characters, or parts thereof, would be missing in various applications including the Lightdm greeter, Firefox, Pidgin, Mate-terminal, the Mate panel clock, Unetbootin, and the Mate menu. This occurs both at my monitor's native resolution (1680x1050) and at 1600x1200.
Other possibly useful info:
libdrm-nouveau2:amd64 2.4.60-3 amd64
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.11-1ubuntu2build1 amd64
