new pre-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault)

Status in libmtp package in Ubuntu:

Status in libmtp source package in Lucid:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: dpkg

This is my second attempt to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4 LTS.
The first time didn't boot after restart so I re-installed the whole lot from 9.10 again and did the upgrade via upgrade manager.

This error is a weird one.

  Reported during the installation process.
  Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/libmtp8_1.0.2-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
with a note below the error dialog box saying, not in working state
subprocess new pre-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault).

then I had other errors following it.
