Title:
[nvidia] Screen corrupts after a while: Most text elements replaced
  with horizontal, colored bars

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

After some time my screen corrupts in that most text elements are
replaced with horizontal lines that seem to be colored according to
surrounding colors before the corruption (see screenshot). The screen
still reacts to mouse and keyboard as before, but whatever control
elements are redrawn contain those lines. Interestingly, some elements
(like the Skype icon in the screenshot, or Java applications) do not
suffer from this corruption. Switching to a console by pressing
CTRL+ALT+F1 and then switching back into X solves the problem for the
moment; the screen is still corrupted but forcing it do be redrawn by
dragging around windows etc. redraws things correctly.

Unfortunately I have not been able to force the corruption by doing
something specific. I am usually using two monitors connected to one
graphics card (one connected through DVI and one through VGA) and it
seems like the issue arises mostly when I have one monitor connected
only (either on the DVI or the VGA port). I have seen it with two
monitors also but much, much less frequently.

I think to remember not having this issue before upgrading to Lucid
Lynx. It was definitely not there half a year ago. My guess would be
it started after an nvidia driver update.
