  Killing X Gives Blank/"Corrupted" TTY

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  After killing X (using alt+print screen+k) I see either a blank or
  "corrupted" screen, see:

  Switching TTY (using ctrl+alt+1,2,3,etc.) does not change the screen
  at all, but if I switch to 1 and type "startx" + enter (I still see no
  change on screen) restarts X.

  While X is running I can switch and use TTYs fine.

  I have seen suggestions that this bug could be due to nVidia driver
  issues, and I do indeed have an nVidia chip.
