a/ the two issues are likely unrelated given the vastly different versions. next time please open a new bug.
b/ the Joomla odp from comment 5 open fine here on Ubuntu 14.04 with LibreOffice 4.2.8. Likely you are either missing fonts used in the presentation or you have broken fonts installed.

Title:
  Missing letters in presentation title - not displayed

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  What happened: When editing a new presentation or viewing existing,
  some letters of a slide title are not visible. They are displayed
  correctly during a slide show, but not in the preview slide (see
  attached screenshot). Changing the font does not help. It seems that
  it is only a display problem, because an exported to PDF file is
  correct.

  What was expected: The titles should be displayed correctly.
