  nvidia driver fails to turn on screen

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  after installing the nvidia proprietary drivers i can no longer use my
  computer. after boot the screen never turns on. i get through grub and
  the splash screen, but when X should come up the screen is off, not
  just painting black but off. i cannot get to a console.
