Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hello,
   
  People who want to install Trusty onto machines with newer nvidia GPUs such as the GTX 960/970/980 have no officially supported way to get the proper nvidia drivers for them. There are already packages in Vivid which do support those GPUs. Please consider packaging and releasing at least those.
