vivid shipped with webkit2gtk 2.6 (you seem to be confusing with webkit1)
epiphany in wily is built against webkit2gtk 2.8, in fact that is a hard dependency for 3.16.

Unfortuantely it is not possible to backport major releases to stable
release of Ubuntu, so this can't be fixed in vivid or earlier

Bug description:
  Epiphany doesn't support desktop notifications on current Ubuntu
  releases. This requires libwebkitgtk 2.8 with libnotify support.
  Currently Ubuntu appears to only ship with 2.4, so this package will
  need updating.
