Title:
User is offered non-working "desktop" option when switching to already
  running session [minor UI glitch]

Status in gdm package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  1. Make sure you have at least two users on your system.

  2. On the shutdown menu (i.e. the power icon on you rpanel, at the top right corner of your screen), you will see "Switch from alan...", and beneath it, the names of other users. Click on one of those names
-> you will be taken back to GDM, with that person's name pre-filled for you

  3. Press the "escape" key
-> GDM will show you the complete list of users

  4. Note that there is green tick by your name, indicating that your
  session is still running.

You can click on your name and enter your password to regain access to
  your session.

However, when you click on your name, you can still see the option to
choose a different desktop (e.g. "Ubuntu Classic", or KDE). But the
option is a lie; selecting an option will not change anything; you
will just switch to your currently running session, whatever that
  happens to be.
