[Bug 1492170] Re: Screen flicker and resolution problems after hot-plug

I am now no longer seeing the flicker and resolution issues much (and
poking the hardware, e.g. by opening the Display control panel usually
gets rid of it). I have a suspicion there might be hardware issues too.
The mouse cursor issue is still present with kernel 4.2.0-7-generic, and
still not present with the mainline kernel, tested with
4.2.0-040200-generic. However it is very hard to get a graphical log-in
with either of the 4.2 kernels at all - it is shown briefly, then I have
a black screen and can get a VT but usually not an X console. I am
currently using 4.1.6-040106-generic again, which just now is working as
well as Ubuntu 15.04 did.

Title:
Screen flicker and resolution problems after hot-plug

Status in xserver-xorg-video-intel package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After upgrading to Wily, when I change the configuration of screens
attached (specifically: dock the laptop to a docking station with a
vertically larger external screen or open the laptop to activate the
internal screen while correctly running with said external screen)
this causes various display issues, including flickering while the
mouse cursor is moved and or one screen flickering the contents of the
other; incorrect resolution; incorrect offset of displayed screen
contents on screen. I saw similar (can't say whether or not
identical) effects using the stock 4.1.0-3.3 generic kernel, and
mainline generic kernels 4.0.0-040000rc2.201503031836 (working before
the first reboot after upgrading to Wily), 4.1.3-040103.201507220129
and 4.1.6-040106.201508170230. In addition (probably a separate
issue), when booting 4.1.0-3.3 to external monitor only, the mouse
  cursor was not shown.

After my last test I was able to bring things back to "normal" by
killing the X server and logging in again.
