[Bug 1029209] Re: tidy doesn't support html5 syntax
There is a new version of Tidy (5.0.0) which has been released and which
is largely backwards compatible with the 2009 Tidy that ships right now.
See https://github.com/htacg/tidy-html5 for the source repository, and
this open issue
https://github.com/htacg/tidy-html5/issues/252
for the packaging issue. There is a desire on the part of the maintainer
to have distributions pick up and offer this current release.

Title:
tidy doesn't support html5 syntax
Status in tidy package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Upstream (W3C?) hasn't updated the code in years, so it doesn't
recognize html5 <!DOCTYPE> declaration, and throws warnings or errors
on valid html5 elements.
Minor bug, maybe wishlist.
