[Bug 1492519] Re: add function to preserve in-memory content of externally modified files

Bug description:
  Rather than forcing the user to make the decision whether or not to
  drop changes which are preserved in memory in case the file was edited
  externally, I'd be nice to allow the user to preserve those
  modifications with a new function.
