I believe this is a duplicate of bug #1199571, which was fixed in
freetype 2.5.2-2ubuntu2 (correcting multithreading problems).

The sharp dropoff on
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/0b6f5fbea05701434a48d7685b5e7d783a8b70be
in February 2015 agrees with this - freetype 2.5.2-2ubuntu2 was released
23 Jan 2015.
