[Bug 1497532] [NEW] clicking gmail launch icon causes system to hang

Public bug reported:

I click on the gmail icon in the launcher and a window opens, but remains blank/white.  
There is no cursor and the system reacts to neither keyboard nor mouse.
Occasional the little drum roll sounds, but nothing is apparent on the screen.
