Message #137886
[Bug 1408302] Re: Sound panel in System Settings fails to recognise built-in audio
During July and August, with higher ambient temperatures, it was
observed that the built-in sound system was not recognised at all.
Suspecting that the bug was a temperature-related hardware problem, I
discussed the matter with Dell technical support. Rather than send the
laptop back under its guarantee (where their support for Ubuntu was not
altogether as thorough as for Windows), Dell agreed to arrange a house
call of their technician. He arrived with a spare sound board and ribbon
cable and replaced the items there and then. This seems to have solved
the problem completely as no further instances of a failure to recognise
the hardware have occurred to date. He explained that such large numbers
of these boards are produced and it is not possible to visually inspect
every soldered joint due to the high density of their construction. In
the event of a suspected dry joint, it is easier to replace the entire
board.
Full marks to Dell technical support for their prompt and effective
response to the problem. I consider the bug to be closed.

Title:
Sound panel in System Settings fails to recognise built-in audio
Status in unity-control-center package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
When starting from cold, the built-in audio system (Speakers) do not
always appear in the Sound panel. After a restart, if the Speakers do
appear, the Settings for Speakers will list the HDMI option instead of
the Test Sound button. A workaround is to plug in a set of Headphones
and select them to produce their Test Sound button. If the Speakers
are then re-selected, their Test Sound button appears as expected.
