[Bug 1353065] Re: NVidia GeForce 710M is not properly detected

Teo, as per http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers an update to
your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (2.21). If you
update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate
does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible, and the
information above is provided, then please mark this report Status New.
Otherwise, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
NVidia GeForce 710M is not properly detected

Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I installed Ubuntu 13.04 on a new laptop which has an NVidia GeForce
710M and later upgraded it to Ubuntu 13.10 and finally 14.04.

After almost a year, I'm astonished to find out that my NVidia card is
not even being used. The Intel Graphics card built into the
  motherboard is being used instead.

The "Additional Drivers" tab under Software & Updates shows what you can see in the attached screenshot:
  "NVIDIA Corporation: GeForce 710M
This device is using an alternative driver"
and the selected item in the list is
"Using X.Org X server - Nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open source)"

I knew that means I'm not using the proprietary NVidia drivers, but
isn't nouveau supposed to support NVidia?

Here's the output of "glxinfo |grep OpenGL":
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 10.1.3
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
  OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.3
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
  OpenGL context flags: (none)
  OpenGL extensions:

  Is there a workaround?

Also, I wonder whether it's safe to select NVidia's proprietary drivers in the Additional Drivers tab.
I ask because once upon a time I tried to install them using "sudo apt-get install nvidia-something" and it screwed up Xorg completely.
