I have been able to find a workaround by compliing the realtek drivers available here: http://drvbp1.linux-foundation.org/~mcgrof/rel-html/backports/ with:

make defconfig-rtlwifi
make
sudo make install

shutdown -r now

The rtl8723ae module is now loaded:
