Late to this....but on 14.04 Studio I get hangs from all NVIDIA drivers for my Nvidia Quadro 4000 - even the latest.
I don't get this with the Nouveau driver...but the resolution is 800x600 with that.

I am commenting because I am wondering if the issue is heat....variable
crashes at different times doing different things....but more common
when viewing videos ie. when more GPU heat.

GPU here was running 80-87 degC - despite many fans in the case...even
when not doing much.

Vacuuming the fan on the video card and all the case fans has it running
around 49-60 degC (watching videos).

So far no crashes....but I am only an hour or so in....they can happen
anytime, so we will see over the next couple of days.

....posted in the vain hope that it might help someone who has also been
suffering this pain.

Bug description:
  After activiting Nvidia drivers complete freezes (only hard reset
  works). Mouse cursor moves, all else seems to come to an instant halt.

  Hardware: Acer Aspire 7520, Geforce 8400m G (shared memory).

  (Re)installing Nouveau drivers 'solves' the problem. Newer Nvidia
  drivers from PPA unsucceslful as well (same problem).

  Laptop works like a charm with 11.10 and nvidia drivers.
