Title:
[Realtek ID 892] ALSA test tone not correctly played back No Audio.
  Ragged Start-up

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
There was once audio. I have audio until I switched from an DVI to a
HDMI video cable- then it all went to pot. I had successfully
installed the nVidia drivers and CUDA for the GeForce 550Ti GPU.
Everything was fine. I switched the cables and it's never been the
  same.

Start requires 3-4 boots, but eventually I get to where I need to be.
The "splash" screen changed from a high-res graphical Ubuntu logo to a
text only Ubuntu logo. Often, it hangs after the sep3_4 drivers are
  loaded.
