I've done some out-of-tree work here via my plugin alternative-toolbar.

If anybody is interested then install via git on my project -
https://github.com/fossfreedom/alternative-toolbar

Hopefully those that have sufficient interest will rework this as a
proper C patch for rhythmbox itself.
