Got the same problem with
"Elementary OS" 0.32 ("Ubuntu" 14.04)
and an installed proprietary driver for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

  screenshot app gives plain blank screen

Bug description:
  When taking screenshots via either printscreen hotkey, app from menu,
  or via external application (scrot) the results simply yield a plain
  blank screen with a mouse pointer.  I have tried all modes with
  floating windows, maximized, and plain desktop. this bug should be
  relatively easy to duplicate. Also do not believe this to be a driver
  issue as on a vanilla ubuntu 12.10 install running identical drivers
  this issue was not present.
