[Bug 1531422] Re: i915 underrun errors causing screen blanking

Trent Lloyd, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

As per http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4980#bios
an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (F8).
If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not.
3) Please mark this report Status New. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
i915 underrun errors causing screen blanking

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am having issues with my displays blanking out and coming back after
2 seconds, quite often.. sometimes a few times in 10 seconds sometimes
once a minute. I only just started using the Intel graphics today,
instead of previously using a radeon card.

My setup is 1xDVI + 1x Displayport, with a powered mulitlink adaptor
to then connect 2 displays. Only the displayport displays blank out.

Similar errors to reported in #1451632 -- I am running xenial up to
  date as of today, 4.3.0-5-generic.

These errors keep appearing, but lots of other stuff is also
appearing. A bunch more occurred since I ran ubuntu-bug to generate
all the xorg data, so i'll attach an extra dmesg log.

  [ 4143.345679] [drm:intel_set_cpu_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared fifo underrun on pipe C
  [ 4143.345688] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe C FIFO underrun

Did not happen first at boot, but once it started didn't stop happening. Was playing video at the time but pausing it didn't seem to stop it.
