Title:
No sound after trying to install latest ALSA from OSS

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
After installing 10.04 initially, my sound didn't work at all for x64
on my Dell XPS with a Creative X-Fi. After looking through various
forums I installed the OSS driver, and everything worked for a while.
I don't know what happened, but everything suddenly stopped working -
I must have done something, but I have no clue what. It wasn't
obviously after installing anything. But I couldn't get anything
working again, including by reinstalling OSS. I decided to try to
revert to the newest ALSA drivers and go from there. I followed
  several guides, including
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting, and the script
  at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810#post6589810

Running that script got me the closest to working - the drivers show
up as loaded now, for example, and I hear a brief crackle when Ubuntu
loads, but not the proper loading sound. However I still have no
sound, and when I try to test with aplay, I get "aplay:
pcm_write:1603: write error: Input/output error" Flash is also now
freezing Chrome tabs whenever I encounter a Flash page. The volume
control widget in the notification area is missing.
