Message #20911
[Bug 818337] Re: Multi-session desktop, network connection down
It's a pretty annoying bug, but it requires large changes to the design,
not something we can easily backport to Lucid.
Fortunately, the changes have been done upstream and the package that
includes this is now at least in the current development version:
Oneiric.
I'll mark this as Fix Released, because I can only acknowledge the issue
for previous releases (and it's been like that forever now, and in all
Linux distros around the same time).
I'm absolutely certain there's a duplicate for this, but I fail to find
it in the bugs database.
Also, note that there is an easy workaround: if "Account1" is
disconnected, you can start nm-applet manually with it's name: "nm-
applet" in a terminal or in the Run dialog. Otherwise, you will need to
first do: "sudo killall nm-applet"; to close the instance from the other
accounts, then you'll be able to start a new one.
** Changed in: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)
Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

Title:
Multi-session desktop, network connection down
Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
Using a default installation of 10.04 LTS ( with ubuntu-restricted-
extras, amsn, skype, thunderbird ). I have 3 users. Account1, Account2
and guest.
1. Account1 logs on
2. Connect to wifi using nm-applet ( wifi icon )
3. Account1 leaves computer
4. Screensaver comes on
5. Account2 logs on ( switch user from lock screen )
6. Account2 DOES NOT HAVE nm-applet icon ( because it is already active on account1's session
7. Account1 logs off the computer
8. Account2 still does not have access to wifi, but internet is now disconnected because Account1's session is ended
Problem :
1. nm-applet is not available to account2
Solution :
1. nm-applet should be launched on the current session when it is closed on the first session
Work around :
1. Account2 logs off, ( loses all any windows that were open ) , logs back on and nm-applet is working
