  "Applying changes" forever on Gimp add-ons

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: software-center

  tried to install add-ons:
  gimp-plugin-registry
  gimp- data-extras

  simply says (In Progress) and hours go by, with no resolution. By
  opening all processes in the system monitor, there is an
  uninterruptible dpkg process:

  from the terminal :~$ ps aux | grep dpkg

  cannot find a way to kill this process.

  As soon as the software-center reopens, it is in the same state of
  halfway-installed.
