Mike, no it doesn't. Try Edit>Keyboard shortcuts and uncheck "Enable
menu access keys such as Alt+F to open the File menu."

  Menu bar shown even when it shouldn't be, without Unity

Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  When not using Unity, the menu bar in gnome-terminal is always shown
  by default, even when the profile settings are to not do so. This also
  results in the right-click menu in the terminal having "Show Menubar"
  as an option, when it is already shown.
