it seems to be a mono bug, according to a banshee developer it was filed
there a few months ago.

Bug description:
  I can't replicate the problem manually, but banshee keeps silently
  crashing (at apparently random moments) while playing songs - whatever
  song and at whatever point in the song , it's not during transitions
  for instance.
