I have now found that this issue is purely a problem of my laptop, a
Fujitsu machine. See here: http://linuxquery.com/26984/wrong-mapping-of-

Title:
enter is mapped to ^[OM in gnome-terminal
Status in GNOME Terminal:
New
Status in “vte” package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-terminal
Not sure which package this bug belongs to, so please refer me to the
right place. The problem is that gnome-terminal maps ENTER to ^[OM in
vim.
Reproduce:
1) open vim
2) press "i" insert mode
3) press CTRL-V
4) press ENTER
you get ^[OM which is wrong, it should be ^M.
