Message #24820
[Bug 456623] Re: Network Manager does not automatically connect Mobile Broadband
Two things are required to get Huawei modems to work on Ubuntu Karmic -
an update to the latest kernel from the Karmic repositories (available
via Update Manager if not already installed) and an update of the
modem's firmware (try your mobile broadband company's website for this).
This fixes most Huawei modems such as the E160, E169 and E220. I'm not
sure about the E172.
Also, official support for Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" has ended. If
this problem is still occurring on a more recent version of Ubuntu
please file a new bug and if possible also test on Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric
Ocelot". Oneiric beta 2 is available now to make a LiveCD and Oneiric
final is scheduled for release on 13th October 2011 if you want to wait
and make a LiveCD then.

Title:
Network Manager does not automatically connect Mobile Broadband
Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
9.10 Beta
NetworkManager Applet 0.7.996
(HP DV6720ez laptop AMD)
NM does not always automatically make the Mobile Broadband connection (Huawai O2 surfstick) at startup.
If no connection, you have to connect manually and it works ok.
If it does make the connection automatically, it's only partially successful as there is no internet connection over Firefox (have not tried other web browsers), but skype works fine.
You then have to manually disconnect and re-connect and Firefox/internet works!
Other related problems:
1. Sometimes (has not happened for the last few days/20-30 re-starts) Mobile Broadband did not appear on NM left-click list at startup although it did appear in the right-click list so you could edit it but not connect to it. Unplugging and re-connecting the surf stick got around this problem.
2. When you unplugged the stick a message popped up with "GSM disconnected you are off-line" even though you weren't online in the first place. This message could also pop up when you plugged the stick in ?
3. Sometimes there would be two surf stick icons on the desktop, one of which you could not unmount.
4. The volume/drive is labelled as a CD.
