seems like a limitation of your video driver, could you run "apport-
collect 850904" to add your xorg logs to this bug?

  Non-mirrored displays fails to align monitors, 'required virtual size
  does not fit available'

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  When using the gnome display config, I used to be able to have my
  monitors in a non-mirrored display setup. However, now when I select
  the non-mirrored variety, I get the following error:

  'The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
  required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2560, 1024), minimum=(320,200), maximum(1280, 1280)'

  This has always worked in the past, but now I can't have my dual
  monitor setup side-by-side which is clearly a regression.
