  Network Manager menu doesn't have any connections

Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Ever since the latest upgrade of network-manager-gnome, the "network" icon doesn't display any networks/connections. 
  I cannot establish a VPN connection, since there's no option to choose from. All I get is what's shown in my screenshot.
