Apparently still a bug then. Possibly dupe of Bug #816646

Title:
Lightdm fails to start ("no screens found") but gdm works fine

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
This is on an 18-month old Thinkpad T410 with a long history of minor
workarounds to fix hardware compatibility bugs; upgrading from
maverick to oneiric with a very brief stopover in natty. In order to
get an x session to load I had to switch from lightdm back to gdm.
There's no xorg.conf anymore (!!) so I don't know where to look, or
what to alter, to fix the problem. The x-0.log, which I don't think
  is attached, reads:

(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
(EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.
  DRM_IOCTL_I915_GEM_APERTURE failed: Bad file descriptor
  Assuming 131072kB available aperture size.
May lead to reduced performance or incorrect rendering.
get chip id failed: -1 [9]
  param: 4, val: 0
(EE) intel(0): failed to get resources: Bad file descriptor
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

  Fatal server error:
  no screens found

Happy to install debug packages, etc., if need be but I imagine this is just a config issue. Thanks,
  Matt
