[Bug 860114] [NEW] 10.04.3 (x64): After first update, GNOME taskbar inop

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi All,

I believe this is related to GNOME desktop.

I recently needed to reinstall Ubuntu 10 on a x64 laptop. Installation
went well, and I rebooted when prompted.

After the reboot, I ran Update Manager and noticed something failed in
the terminal window. As it zipped by, it looked similar to
?????????????-????????????????-gnome-... (it was full of question marks
with gnome tacked on). Kernel was updated so I needed another reboot.

Upon rebooting and logging in, there was another error about a missing
desktop component, and I was asked if I wanted to delete its entry.
Sadly, I chose to delete the missing component entry without taking note
of what it was.

At this point, I can't find a record of the problem in the logs )dpkg or
jockey) via the Log Viewer, so I'm having problems with locating the
component again (damn, why did I not write it down!!!). While programs
will launch, they do not minimize to the desktop's taskbar. The only way
to get to them is through ALT-TAB.

This has the smell of a Unity cross-contaminated desktop (why is Unity
being installed on desktops and servers or 11.x? why not limit Unity to
what its designed for - netbooks and touch pads?).

Any help in getting a fully function desktop back would be appreciated.
I'll take a fixed package that I can reinstall since I don't believe its
an isolated incident.

** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)

         Status: New
