This is a long standing bug. It also affects ubuntu-10.04, 10.10, &
11.04.

I know a lot of ubuntu users would appreciate it if this long-standing
bug got fixed before too much longer.

Bug description:

  Notice all the blank space in the right side of the Nautilus window?
  This picture shows a Nautilus folder with 14 items in Icon-View. Yet
  the icons will only display in List view despite the fact that there
  is a large amount of free space to the right where icons could be
  presented from left-to-right.

  Bug = valuable space that could be used to present icons is wasted
  when users enlarge icons in Icon-View.
