Title:
Sound level icon is inconsistent with gnome-settings-daemon
  notifications

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: indicator-sound

This is easy to reproduce and tough to describe, so I'll just let you do that.
Adjust the volume using hardware controls. Note the difference between indicator-sound's menu icon and gnome-settings-daemon's notification icon. This is particularly evident around 30%

This bug has been around for a while (I could have sworn it was
reported, but I can't find it), but it's especially prominent in Natty
because the notification bubble appears to be triggered when one
adjusts the volume with the mouse wheel over the menu, too. This puts
the two conflicting icons exactly where the user is looking.

The set of available icons is consistent, so it looks like either
gnome-settings-daemon or indicator-sound just needs to change its
  numbers a little.
