Update: same thing happens when "Unity 2d" is selected at the login, but
usage is slightly less intense (90-97%).

Title:
lightdm locks a core to 100% usage
Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
- lightdm locks one core (out of 4 in my case) to 100% usage
- killing a process / new instance does not help
- This is the process that locks a core:
/usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7
-novtswitch -background none
- similar to bug #872939 only in regard of locking to 100%, but I do
not have multiple accounts
