Title:
If login triggers a crash, no error message is given
Status in “gdm” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Binary package hint: gdm
In general, if gnome crashes and the user is kicked back to GDM, they
receive no information about what caused the crash. Obviously such
crashes should be fixed, but the user should also receive some sort of
information about what went wrong. In my case, now whenever I login
using gdm the screen goes black and GDM reloads rather than loading my
gnome desktop. I have no way of knowing if X crashed, if GDM crashed,
if Gnome crashed, if a startup script crashed, etc., which means I
have no way to figure out what log files to look at or what to Google
for. For technically unsophisticated users, it'd still be useful to
point out to them that they can try the Gnome failsafe option, or to
list the Canonical paid support phone #, and for advanced users it'd
be nice to have a dialog with a 'details' button that will reveal the
raw information about what went wrong.
