[Bug 709970] Re: Sierra 301 USB mobile almost nevers connects

Hi all I would reopen this bugreport and move it to kernel/firmware
category with the following additional information and my experiences I
describe below.

The above posted part of syslog with the error message "Incompatible
driver and firmware versions" is a kernel message and has nothing to do
with network-manager which is a userland utility that builds up
connections through the network device drivers that the kernel has
already loaded. So this bug is related to the kernel.

Here is my personal experience: I was using Kubuntu Natty x64 with a
Sierra USB AirCard 306 and it worked without hacking, just plugged it
and it connected through the network-manager. The kernel version I used
was 2.6.38-11-generic. Yesterday I have upgraded my Kubuntu to Oneiric
and the same problem reappeared described in this bugreport. The kernel
version I used was 3.0.0-12-generic. I have rebooted my Oneiric with the
previous Natty kernel (see above the version) and now it loads the
firmware without error message.

Additional information: I have the same problem with Debian Squeeze
2.6.32-5-686 and it connects through pppd instead of network-manager.

At this point I have not tried to connect to my ISP as the SIM card
inserted needs top-up but I have my main SIM card which is monthly-paid
in the old 3g modem that I'm using actually to write this comment. After
submitting I replace the SIM cards and the dongles and I will return
with more info (syslog, lsmod, etc).

Title:
Sierra 301 USB mobile almost nevers connects

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager

Need help getting my Sierra 301 USB mobile broadband stick to work on
my new motherboard ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3.

The Sierra 301 stick works fine on my Eee PC running Ubuntu 10.04 & 10.10 and it also works on the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard when running winxp
I have no idea where to start looking, here is the output from dmesg when the stick is inserted and trys to connect.

  $ dmesg

One other thing I have noticed is that when I "Enable Mobile
Broadband" from right clicking network icon, the mobile network status
is still "Not enabled" from the left click on the network icon.

I have managed to connect to the Internet 3 times in 3 months here is
the dmesg output to compare the two but after a restart I can't
connect again. I have not been able to find what special combination
is actually getting the connection to work it seems to be completely
  random.
