Title:
screensaver backlight stuck off, system looks hung

Status in Gnome Settings Daemon:
  New
Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
After the screensaver fades the screen to black and turns off the
backlight, tapping a keyboard key does NOT turn the backlight back on
again. The backlight is "stuck off" making the system appear to be
  hung.

This a regression in Ubuntu 11.10.

  ----- (original problem description) -----

[The original problem description is below, however it has been
determined that the problem occurs with the the stock 11.10 release
kernel and does not actually relate to acpi_backlight=vendor.]

I have been using Kamal Mostafa's kernels for my Dell Studio 15 for a
few releases. Now, in oneiric, the brightness can not be changed
unless I add acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel command line. The
brightness adjustment works fine when I make this change.

However, when I add this command line option, it introduces another
issue where when the display goes to sleep, it does not resume.

Somtimes I get the screen back by switching to a console tty and then
back to the X tty. But, the only reliable way I can get a screen to
come back on is to close the laptop lid (so the system suspends) and
then open it. The display will turn on for resume.
