Furthermore, in some cases

This could be the case. Ubuntu's default configuration is to not require 
ipv6 for the connection to complete.

Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  network-manager-applet
  When selecting "connection information"  the ipv6 addresses are not show . (there is a heading but an empty list)
  ifconfig shows the addresses properly.
