[Bug 873154] Re: Nautilus crashes ruining Unity desktop

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Title:
  Nautilus crashes ruining Unity desktop

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  distro: Ubuntu 11.10 beta amd64 20111005
  pkg: nautilus 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu5,

  1. Nautilus crashes when browsing "/" (aka file system root).
Open Nautilus from unity launcher, click on "File System" on left panel to browse the root.
Click on any root directory, and nautilus crashes.

  2. Nautilus crashes when view hidden files is enabled.
Open Nautilus from unity launcher, enable view hidden files, and click on any folder to view it, and nautilus crashes.

  3. Nautilus crashes when another tab is opened.
Open Nautilus from unity launcher, middle click any folder on the left panel. Click on the newly open tab to browse it and nautilus crashes.

  4. Open terminal from unity launch, and run nautilus from that
terminal. Running nautilus from terminal is more resistant to
crashing. I will be able to view root folders but still crashes when
  view hidden files is enabled.

  After nautilus crashes:
All the icons on the desktop disappears. Clicking on nautilus launcher from unity bar does not launch nautilus at all. I will need to start a terminal and run nautilus from there. When nautilus is run this way, the icons on the desktop reappears until nautilus crashes again.

  Compiz customizations:
Have used ccsm to modify unity bar launch icon size to 32, made unity bar to autohide. Installed "open in terminal".
