Title:
gnome-settings-daemon has to be killed and a new instance started

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

With an up-2-date system, when I log in via GDM, gnome-settings-daemon
is running but is apparently not providing settings. I have to kill
the process then start it anew. Once I do, all is well. There seems
to be a race condition here.
