Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable
release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test
with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about

Title:
  apt-get install shared-mime-info crashes with Segmentation fault

Status in “shared-mime-info” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

  Installing any package with apt-get currently fails.  The messages
  always report trouble with shared-mime info.  Therefore, I am trying
  to reinstall it.  The post-installation script segfaults.  Here is an
  example run:

  What I expected to happen:  Either that apt-get would simply state that the package was already installed or that it would install it.
  What happened instead:  The post-installation script seg faulted and apt-get failed.
