Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable
release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test
with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about

  gnome-settings-daemon going wild

Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

  User logged out of system, but one process was left behind:
  username     1607     1 67 14:59 ?        03:55:03 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon

  That filled .xsession-errors with the following line:
  (gnome-settings-daemon:1607): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

  and as a result .xsession error ended up with size of 157G until disk
  was filled and that process was killed with KILL (-9).
